A Breif History of Essential Oils

Ever asked yourself why essential oils?
What is all the fuss about?

Is it just a passing fad or are there really benefits that we are all able to integrate into our lifestyle?

Let’s start with a little history on oils. This is certainly no passing fad. They have been used long before life as we know it, in almost every culture throughout the world, bridging gaps between cultures and health care professionals with a wide range of medical and health benefits. Essential oils have been thought to have been used as early as 2000 BC, by ancient Egyptians. They used essential oils for medicinal benefits, beauty care, spiritual enhancement, and in literally all aspects of their daily life.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine was reported to have advised that “The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day.” Well if was good enough for the ancient Greeks, its most certainly good enough for us right!

Essential oils are also at the core of Ayurvedic health, founded in India, a natural healing system blending spiritual, philosophical and practical elements. The origin of Ayurvedic is believed to have been practiced for at least 5000 years and is widely practiced in India today. One of the main practices of Ayurveda is aromatic massage. Ayurvedic literature dating back from 2000 BC records Indian doctors administering oils of cinnamon, ginger, myrrh, coriander, spikenard and sandalwood to their patients. These oils are the foundation of many oil blends today, that are used to fight germs, colds and Flu.

The Ancient Romans were noted to have used essential oils with excessive indulgence. They bathed lavishly in oil and had frequent massages with essential oils.  They also used essential oils to scent the hair, body and the bed. Skilled perfumers began blending perfumes and a new industry was founded.

The Chinese are renowned for their use of herbs, plants and teas for their medicinal value, thought to date back as far as 2700BC

I think we are all aware that in the bible baby Jesus was given gold, frankincense and myrrh. Moses received the specifics for a holy anointing oil, included in that formula was cassia, cinnamon, clove, galbanum, myrrh, olive oil and spikenard. Again, these oils are used to fight germs, colds and flu today.

In more recent times in the 1600’s most of Europe adopted the use of essential oils in herbal medicine, beauty products and treating a variety of illnesses. In the 1800’s areas in the south of France were supplying raw materials for French perfumers. Tuberculosis was common, yet workers processing flowers and herbs generally remained disease-free. They believed that the antibacterial benefits of essential oils in the plants were protecting the workers. Essential oils have also been known to treat soldiers in military hospitals during WW1 and during the Indochina war. They were used as antiseptics to fight of infections when antibiotics became out of supply. Now that we have a better understanding of the longevity, depth of use and  extensive research of essential oils, how are we able to best incorporate them into our busy lives and how do we determine what is best for us?

Firstly, always buy essential oils that you are attracted to, as they will always provide you with what you need at that moment in time. They will be soothing, nurturing or stimulating for reasons that will be unveiled as you explore the therapeutic benefits of each oil.
